Oleaster (Senjed)
Oleaster fruit, commonly referred to as Senjed in Iran, and famous by names such as wild olive and silver berry is a product of a tree by the same name, scientifically known as Elaeagnus angustifolia.
Because of the plant’s unique features, it can grow even in difficult climatic and soil situations and it’s cultivated in many places including Iran. In order to get the full taste and minimum the astringent flavor, one must wait for the fruit to become completely ripe.
Its special place in Iran, beside many medical usages in traditional medicine, is because of the ancient Persian new year celebration and the custom of setting a table with 7 items (7 seen or 7 s) all starting with “s” sound. Senjed is employed in this celebration (Nowrouz) as a symbol of love, embellishing the setting.
The fruit is edible with a special sweet taste and mealy structure, and is an excellent source of a lot of minerals, flavonoids, Vitamn A, E and C; that has led to a variety of medical usages and health benefits. It’s also a good source of fatty acids, which is not common for a fruit and has added to the wonders of Oleaster.
Oleaster (Senjed) Medicinal benefits and usages
The compounds in the fruit, such as the vitamins and minerals as well as antioxidant properties, result in enhancing the immune system and are good for ant inflation purposes. Stopping the bacterial activities, it also works as an antibiotic. Raising the collagen level, it leaves the skin brighter and decreases the wrinkles by rejuvenating the skin.
Another widely prescribed way to use the fruit is to add the powder to milk as a remedy for rheumatoid arthritis and as a way to deal with joint problems.
Oleaster (Senjed) cubes
